Should You Install a Garage Door With or Without Windows?

When you start looking to replace or install a new garage door, you’re going to come across the issue of whether or not you want the door to include windows. Follow along with the experts at Overhead Door Co. of Indianapolis & Muncie to find out whether or not you should have windows on your garage door!

To Install Windows or Not to Install Window?

While the question is largely one of personal tastes and design, there are still some considerations that should be taken into account. Let’s look at it this way:

What We Love About Garage Door Windows

The benefits of including nice, high-quality glass in a door are actually pretty big, including:

  • More natural light. Many garage areas turn out to be pretty dark and dank, even on the brightest of spring afternoons. By adding windows you get a whole lot more bright, natural lighting, which is a cost-effective way to illuminate space. It’s also pleasant, and more desirable than LED or fluorescent bulbs.
  • More options. Every single thing you include in or around your home is a reflection of your personal design tastes. So naturally adding more design options is never remiss! From size, to shape, to glass type, there are lots of garage door window choices to make, and this can both be fun and help you to love your new garage door even more.
  • Uniformity. For many homes a garage is just kind of an unwieldy block of materials. Adding customized glass windows can do a lot to beautify your garage and make it feel a lot more like it belongs with your home.

What We Don’t Love

There’s really only one big drawback to installing windows, and that’s security. Glass won’t hurt the structure or durability of your garage door at all, but glass is also a good bit more brittle than metal or fiberglass. That means a stray object could shatter the glass, inviting intrusion.

Having said that, though, there are lots of secure glass options, including reinforced glass. Additionally most windows aren’t really large enough to really allow intrusion in the first place. But it’s worth considering, and should factor into your decision for sure.
